Kerndown

To improve our understanding of Kerning we took part in a studio task called Kerndown. In a small group we chose 5 letters to create a word and adjusted the kerning to suit different brands.

This image demonstrates how we experimented with kerning to suit a high end cigarette company. Keeping the individual letters aligned with a small kerning distance allows for the word to remain clear to read as well as giving a professional in control appearance of the company.

1: Pest Control Company - 30 seconds
   - Pest control is a serious organisation therefore we chose to keep the kerning minimal to give a professional look to the design.

2. Condom Company - 30 seconds
    - We went for a more humorous approach for this design by adjusting the position of the I. This is to represent the male genitals.

3. Student Night Club - 30 seconds
  - The positioning of the letters represent the up and down beat of the music, with the tight kerning relating to the crowded space of a night club.

4. Car Company - 30 seconds
   - Using plus kerning gives the typography a professional look which is the image a car company aims to have. This is because it makes them look reliable and demonstrates their high end dealership.

5. Children's Animation Programme - 30 seconds
   - Adjusting the positioning and having a tight kerning gives the logo a fun feel which is what you want when designing for children. This adds an element of fun and creativity to the design.

6. Quentin Tarantino Film - 60 seconds
