Album Cover Designers

Peter Saville

Each of the designs by Peter are focused around one particular shape, giving a simplistic look to the album cover. This gives the design a focus without over complicating the audiences view.

Samuel Johnson

There is a consistent style with this artist. The background design of the album covers are subtly detailed either through colour or pattern. This was a stand out factor that caught my eye which is a key element that is need to attract the audience to an album. There is also a consistency with framing certain elements of the design which highlights particular areas such as the album and artists name.

Craig Thompson

This style of artwork stood out to me as it is alternative to what you would typically expect. Doing something in the form of this style would expand my illustration skills as well as having a design that is detailed and engaging with the audience. This is an element I would like to explore within this brief.

Annie Leibovitz (Photographer)

Taking a photography approach to this brief would be an alternative way at looking at the vinyl sleeve design. This would require using models who were not the artist which is not an uncommon method to use, however would require informed and appropriate research.

Storm Thorgerson

This artist stood out to me as knowing the albums myself has shown that the design is more intricate to the style of music and the message of the album. This highlights the importance of understanding the music you are designing the cover for. On the other hand it could be interesting to experiment with ideas before looking into the song in more detail.

Leif Podhajsky

Narcsville

This artists explores the more 'hands on' method of producing work. On 'Its Nice That' he has been credited for being an artists who's 'still designing by actually getting their hands dirty and knowing their way around some scissors, Pritt Stick and a screen-printing bed.' The more traditional form of print is something that I would like to explore with this brief, looking at mono print and screen printing.
