Stuart Semple

Design Week - https://www.designweek.co.uk/issues/august-2013/time-to-talk-stuart-semples-designs-for-mental-health/

The campaign Time To Talk is run by the charities Mind and Rethink Mental Illness. Their aim is to 'end the stigma and discrimination that is faced by mental health problems'. This campaign was supported by Stuart Semple, a contemporary british artist who designed a temporary tattoo graphic for individuals to wear. This was recognised by celebrities such as Ricky Hatton, Frankie Sandford and Rachel Bruno.

Following the aim of the campaign, 'it is hoped that it will encourage individuals to open up about mental health and to promote the more open and honest support for people affected by the issues'. (Emily Gosling, 2013)

The design itself is a simple line drawing of a mega phone, described by Semple as being 'fluffy and cartoony'. Due to the design of the tattoo, there could be a limit with the audience who would be open to wearing the temporary tattoo. However, if an individual's thoughts and support of the campaign was strong enough then there should be no limitations to them wearing the design.

'As it's a social media thing, the design had to translate well for Instagram and Twitter and things, so it had to be quite bold and graphic' - Semple.  This is an important aspect of the design to consider and it's highly relevant to responding to this brief. Depending on the target audience, it may be more appropriate to launch a social media campaign as this is a platform that young individuals/young adults engage with on a daily basis. The target audience and the platform that the design will be displayed on with highly influence the design to ensure that it is appropriate and relevant.
