Cultural Appropriation

Cultural appropriation is the adoption or use of elements of one culture by members of another culture. This can sometimes be perceived as controversial, harmful or offencive. This typically occurs when the cultural property of a minority group is used by members of a more dominant culture without receiving consent. This is an example of misappropriation and a violation of intellectual property rights. Cultural appropriation can include the use of other cultures' traditionals, fashions, symbols, language and cultural songs without permission.

Sanaa Hamid is a photographer who has documented a neutral stance to whether cultural appropriation is acceptable or not. The photography series involves volunteers being photographed as well as their thoughts on what the items mean to them.
