Kirkgate Market - Fire

Saturday December 13, 1975

On this date in 1975, a blaze engulfed the space and destroyed the market. In many of the articles that are posted on the internet about this event, each one describes the spirit and passion of the traders, who were back trading in what market space they had within days of the fire. This demonstrates the passion and sense of community that Leeds has, as well as showing how the residents pull together and 'get on with things'. This enthusiasm was also recognised and praised by Prince Charles, who visited the market on Wednesday 17th December. 'G W Jameson, chief contracts manager with Leeds City Council, said: “The Prince was amazed how quickly we got part of the market open and praised everyone concerned.”

In the article published on Wordpress of the account from the Yorkshire Evening Post, there are two accounts of individuals who remember the events that happened nearly 42 years ago.

Notes:

110 Fireman and two hours to control

1857 section of the market was destroyed

1904 frontage on Vicar Lane remained

Many stall holders found temporary locations in the Corn Exchange, George Street and Harewood Street Car Parks

Visit from Prince boosted morals

Although the fire that destroyed a large percentage of the market was a devastating event the passion, enthusiasm and level of community that was displayed from the stall holders and shoppers of the market are a clear representation of the people of Leeds which is something that requires recognition and celebration.
