The Great Barrier Reef - Research

The Great Barrier Reef is located in the Coral Sea off the coast of Queensland, Australia and is the world's largest coral reef system. To start the initial research side of the collaboration project, we are individually researching the Great Barrier Reef to ensure that we all have an equal understanding and knowledge level of the reef.

  • - Astronauts can see the Great Barrier Reef from space
  • - Over 1500 different species of fish live in the Great Barrier Reef, including clownfish, star of the animated film Finding Nemo

  • - Approximately 350,000 square kilometres in size and stretches 2300 kilometres along the coastline of Queensland – that’s the size of about 70 million football fields

  • - The world's biggest single structure made by living organisms

  • - World Heritage site since 1981

  • - One of the 7 natural wonders of the world

  • - Coral bleaching is widely affecting the northern parts of the reef. This is due to a warming of ocean temperatures

  • - Supports a diversity of life, many of these being vulnerable or endangered species
