Group Experimentation

Produce a publication containing information on 'What to do in the event of a flood':

Notes:
- as this is an issue across the UK the publication will need to be sent out to every household, therefore addressing a wide target audience
- consider: audience, colour, layout, hierarchy of information

Ideas:
- Concept; having the essential information clearly displayed on an easy to produce publication, has has a low cost of producibility. The design should effectively communicate the information in a legible and creative way with the use of image and text to attract the reader.
- Postcard; this would be a low cost design that would contain the vital information however due to the size it may be discarded and lack the detail that some individuals may require if they live in a flood prove area
- Poster; this is a clear way to display the required information in a clear and creative way. A drawback of this idea is that households would not necessarily pin up a poster and it may be harder to take in the information if displayed in shop windows or on information boards
- Envelope information leaflet; having the poster designed in a way that it can also be an envelope will save money in terms of producing the publication. The information would be displayed in a way that images and text would work together so that the audience is not put off reading the publication

What to include:
- Checklist of what to do in the event of a flood; this adds an element of interactivity to the publication, making it more appealing for younger children as well as something for adults to use as guidelines
- Social media sites with the details of pages that provide information on local flooding
- Emergency contacts

After creating a mock up of the postcard is quickly became evident that there was not enough space to put the relevant information in a clear and legiable way. As there are various areas to cover with this type of publication, more white space is needed so that the design is successful at drawing the audience in to read the information.

After experimenting with the envelope, we then decided to take the areas that had been highlighted as a limitation and ensure that these are overcome in the envelope design. As there is more white space to work with this design is more successful. As the information is serrated into topic areas, it makes it easy for the audience to read the relevant information rather than having to read paragraphs of text. This relates back to the concept of the design having image and text so that the information is legible and clearly understood.

This task has highlighted that for Studio Brief Two I need to experiment with at least three different ideas and produce mock ups so that I can evaluate what works well and what is less successful so that the final resolution is appropriate and successful at communicating the public information.
