Map Design

As the handbook is aimed at those who have possibly not visited the town before, I have considered ways in which the publication can make the visit more appealing by providing that extra information. Looking through the research something that stood out was the map design used in The Skinny.

This map design contains relevant information such as the street names and the type of road via colour coding. The places featured in the handbook are also numbered depending on which number description they fit with as well as colour coded depending on the nature of the place (shop/restaurant/bar) which is explained in the key below the image.
With the increasing use of technology a map is rarely used when physically in the location, however before visiting the place you can see how close together the different key places are, as well as planning your visit. This makes the readability of a map important in a handbook of this nature and enhances the reader's experience by providing that little extra piece of information to make their visit easier. This is something that is important because if the handbook is clear, interesting and easy to understand/use, this will encourage the reader to visit the particular place being 'advertised'.

Using the above design as inspiration I have tested a few designs for a beginning direction for the map. To continue with this I will gather feedback that will hopefully enhance and aid the design process.
