Idea generation

Notes on direction for the book

Idea One:

After reading and annotating 'A Field Guide to Typography' I was influenced to consider producing a similar style of publication. This would remove the influence of the town on the typography as the primary focus would be the typography in each image rather than the location.

Audience: Designers/Students interested in typography and who want to better their knowledge on the subject.
Purpose: To inform the reader of the different typefaces used in everyday life and provide background information on the type. The publication would also have a visual purpose making it a possible 'coffee table book'.

Idea Two:

Taking into consideration the importance of the production of the book being informed by the content, this idea has been generated through the analysis of the research. This would mean that the purpose of the book is a display of the photographs with an informative element about the town. This would result in the publication being a vastly produced product which from the knowledge that I gained through the trip at Pressision, is a more productive way of printing as it reduces the overall production cost.

Feedback:

1 - It was discussed that there is not a sufficient amount of content for a book based purely on typography in Tynemouth. For this to be informatively successful there would need to be a larger content library therefore this book would be lacking in content if this idea were to be taken further. However, a discussed resolution to this would be to make the publication a one off print therefore would fit the requirements of a more specialist publication which relates to the content being based on a local element rather than global typography.

2 - For this idea it was discussed that the content being purely based on the town had potential as it is open to a number of design opportunities. The book would also have a more limited target audience as it would only appeal to those who had an interest in the town. This can be seen as a positive and negative. Having a more niche target audience would allow the design to be created with this audience's preferences taken into consideration. However, the larger this target audience is, the more likely it is that the publication would not appeal to the majority. This may be through design, production or cost of purchase.
