Module Evaluation

Throughout this module I have been able to explore my variety of interest in graphic design, illustration and organisation. Exploration of these areas has highlighted the common theme of my practice focusing on identity based briefs and working with image. This is an area my understanding has improved in through being actively aware of current design trends and from alternative knowledge provided by regular reading of the online journey, It’s Nice That and AiGA Eye on Design. Having an active presence in the creative field influences my work daily and has helped draw direction when needed. 

Working in collaboration has also been a focus throughout this module. I have found that my practice benefits from being around other creatives. This has allowed me to develop skills in idea generation, typography and specific software such as After Effects. When working alone my practice can often be narrowing and lack creative thinking. This module has taught me the importance of gaining alternative feedback and the collaboration briefs assisted with that. There were also negatives that arrose when working in collaboration. In Brief 05 my collaboration partner’s work mentality did not reflect my own which meant that internal deadlines were not met. This collaboration caused a lot of disrupt to my practice however has developed my confidence in managing other peoples time and ensuring effective communication to progress work. Other collaborations such as in Brief 06 were much more effective and has built on a relationship that I hope to continue in the future. Working with an individual who compliments my own practice as well as offering my own insight on hers benefited the overall brief and outcome. Exhibition organisation is an area that I would like to continue exploring and hope to complete future exhibitions following a similar structure as explored in this brief. 

Through engaging with Micheal Lewis (The Archipelago) and receiving his advice on how to pitch and display work to clients, the presentation of my work has become more visual, with appropriate annotations being made. This had made it easier when demonstrating work to a client as they are able to understand where the influences  and why design decisions have been made. This has ensured effective feedback in certain briefs completed. This is a structure I will be able to apply to future job roles and is already appropriate to my working at LeedsBID.

My time management throughout this module has been assisted by the use of a calendar. This allowed for planning of all modules and outside activities. This ensured that internal deadlines were set and achieved as well as allowing for a variety of briefs to be completed. This calendar became less effective when working in collaboration due to peers having other briefs to manage at the same time. This reflects a real life situation and has demonstrated the importance of communication.
